It Was the Best of Times, It Was the Worst of Times...

Hi everyone!  This is  Heather, Ellie's sister - the pretty, nice one.  Ellie just wanted me to give all of you a quick update.  Ellie has had a very tough three weeks.  And unfortunately she is not getting better.  We have taken her out of the horrible palliative care center, and we have her at her favorite little hotel that she has been coming to for ten years.  Regrettably, Ellie can barely speak, can neither eat nor drink, and she can no longer hold up her head.  However she still has her sense of humor and sharp tongue intact.  Her favorite caregivers are here around the clock.  All of her dearest friends will be arriving to provide love and laughter..  Ellie is doing her best to stay strong and will, by the grace of God, get better.  Ellie wants me to tell all of you that she loves you and thanks you for your prayers and well wishes.

I will keep you updated on her progress.

Love, Heather

  14. This makes my heart sad. You are kind to update us on Eleanor's condition, Heather, even though we already knew you were the "pretty, nice one." The only bit of good news is that she "still has her sense of humor and sharp tongue." I daresay you and your mother have been able to enjoy both these past few days. I wish I were there to yell at her. Give her a big, sloppy wet kiss from Brad and me and tell her to take out her pissyness on room service, not you.

  35. OMG Ellie!! We were to meet, but you were busy or something. Kelly was suppose to set up the thing. Well she had to ask Jen or something since we don't really know each other, other than via Facebook and Kelly telling me about you. I even got some of my Hermes orange shopping bags, and was going to fill them with Fritos and have u do Giraffe! And drink champ and talk tea/ shade on people. I was to push you around Paris, on my 2 day layover, and run people down! Then of course we would laugh at them. I was also going to tell you that blowing down the wall to take you out of your place was really, because you were super fat like the people on Maury! That you photoshopped yourself. Also, tell you that ALS is sooo 2014, that you need to keep current and became transgender like Bruce. But reading this, life is a true cunt! I hope your seester reads this to you, so you laugh. I hope you voted for Bernie at the U.S Embassy! Hillary is a cunt! If your seester could type for you, tell her to hit Kelly and I on our Facebook chat. <3

  66. Dear Heather, Ellie has been in my thoughts every moment of the day since she started declining. She is my, and many others, inspiration, I was fortunate to meet Ellie when I was in Paris last year, her beauty inside and out was just blinding. We stayed in touch via email and she always managed to put a smile on my face even when tears were just pouring out. I have had a very rough year, ending with a betrayal by someone whom I considered not only the most honorable man that I had ever met but my best friend and life partner. Ellie was there every step of the way, she answered emails, gave me advise and above all made me feel that I mattered when I felt very sad and alone. She is an amazing person and prayers for her are being said around the world. I light a candle for her every night and I send her all my love and healing energy. Please give her a hug and a kiss for me. With all my love, Lourdes

Who would guess that following the thoughts and adventures of a woman struggling with a hideous monster, ALS, would help me see again that life is wonderful no matter what challenges present themselves? My prayers and healing energies are focused on you, Ellie. Please keep fighting until the battle is won and your indomitable spirit prevails! The world desperately needs your charm, wit, elegance, irreverence, taste and kicksss spirit and, frankly, so do I. Much love to you and your family and many thanks, Heather, for rewarding my search for news of Ellie!

  89. Heather, thank you so much for keeping us updated. I'm thinking about all of you.
Ellie, thank you for being tenaciously, fabulously you. I'm sure I feel the way many people here feel--that I don't come across many truly kindred spirits and I feel we are. The first post of yours I read was a gift from Janet at the Gardener's Cottage about your Christmas tree. As I read it I bounced between crying and laughing and felt like I was reading my own thoughts. After reading here, I was so inspired to write in my true voice and arm myself with your attitude of "oh you don't like it? Fuck off." Being able to pour my heart out in words had been a huge and positive change for me and I have you to thank.
As you may gather, I am not one to hold back with the people I love. I'm kind of like the big slow one in mice and men (of all the books I haven't read, why did I fucking bother with that one? Why do schools require that and not grapes of wrath which is pretty good--not as good as Out of Sync by Lance Bass--but good). So forgive me for just saying that I love you and thank you. For everything.
If things take a turn for the better, I'll be happy to chat about my stupid plates for my Easter table and how I broke new ground in adding more cream and sugar to already creamy and sugary things. If they don't, know that I'll carry some of you in my soul. Hopefully the part that nabs attractive French men who go antiquing and buy really good presents. Sending you all my love (not that there's much competition for it).

    2. I came to Ellie via Janet as well and it was like the rug was pulled out from under me - so honest, funny, heart wrenching. There is no better blog out there than this one, and Stephen Andrew, you have been a gift under this Christmas tree. Your comments are always my favorite and you are right - you and Ellie are kindred spirits. This turn of events pains us all but you write so much like her that I am feeling more protective of your heart more than my own.

  91. Dearest Ellie, I can't tell you enough how much your blog means to me, since I first read it back in 2014. Your flower post was so amazing, and because of you I've learned how to arrange flowers-- something I never knew I wanted to do, or thought I had the energy to do. Since January I've started writing fiction again, a little bit every day -- also, because of your stellar example --it's not perfect, but I have scenes and characters and a rough armature of the storyline -- about 200 pages right now. I have a long way to go before I have a complete first draft with lots of research and rewriting ahead of me. Every day I feel excited about getting to create something to the point where I forget about how much my body hurts and how sick I physically feel. You are a beautiful soul and you have made such a difference in my life. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for this gift. I'm glad you're in your favorite hotel and I am sending you enormous hugs and love. Heather, thank you for sending news about Ellie.

You are so tough, more than I thought was possible for a human being! Thank you for that, for being so tough and for being such an ideal, such an impressing rolemodel!

You have given me such a reality check! I know now how blessed, how priviliged I am. Doing this blog and reporting about your development has probably done more than any philosopher or coach could do. I think we all learn a lot about life here.

Not only you are strong but especially your daughter is too, your husband is too and your sister, mother and family. I am very happy they are with you now and that they got you out of the palliative center. That is no place to be for a fighter like you!

Save your energy now to get better!

Know that we all love you and your family and we all send you energy and strength!

    Love, Silke

I've been thinking of Ellie these last weeks and as I look around my house and admire the items I bought from her shop I think how fortunate that Ellie decorated for me from Paris (antique paisley tablecloth, chinoiserie boxes, chinoiserie sconces, these objects are imbued with special Ellie-ness, great style, unafraid!). I'm trying to send her energy and I hope it's working. Wishing her peace and love XOX

  174. Dear Ellie,
I first discovered your blog when Heather (from that design blog) mentioned she had stayed with you while looking for her summer apartment. Wow, was I thrilled to find you. You have enriched my inbox and life, except for when you didn't pick my Christmas tree as the winner; I suspect someone bought you off with flowers and chocolates! I then backtracked and read all your entries. I learned so much and will be forever grateful for your knowledge and hilarious opinions. I especially liked how a zebra rug should be positioned since it was dead on right.
In post after post we followed you around Paris, then alas, you got your wish and we followed you to 'too peaceful' Provence. And now, we are in new territory...I don't know where we go from here but I do know that we will be with you.
Sending the blessings of all the Easter angels to ease this time and lift you up.
    With love and thanks,
