About

Who am I? I am a lot of things. The only one that I want to be defined by is that of a mother. Anything past that is just fluff. I used to be a lot of things too. I used to be an interior designer. I used to have an antique store in Santa Barbara. I used to live in New York. I used to work at the fabulous chic Assouline Publishing in New York but I got fired because I wasn’t very friendly. I used to work at 1stdibs in New York. It was my favorite job that I've ever had but I only had it for two weeks because I got sick.

I used to be a perfectly healthy functioning woman with not a care in the world. Then, life changed. I don’t like to just throw it out there that I have ALS, a terminal disease. ALS does not define me but it has changed the way I look at things. Nothing and everything matters to me now. I know what is important and I know what is not important. My daughter, my husband, my friends, my cat and my dog matter.

Me keeping my sanity through all of this matters and in doing so I like to do this blog. I don’t have anything to prove, I don’t have anyone to impress and I have nothing to lose. Therefore this blog focuses on everything that I like… Art, architecture, culture, fashion, flowers, food, Paris, travel, interior design, houses, gardens, faith etc. Just for the fun of it I like to focus on everything that I don’t like as well. I feel like I can be totally honest with my opinions because I have no agenda. I imagine readers will appreciate that. So, I invite you to come along on this little journey with me. It will be fun. XO XO

    1. Penelope, I worship you. I came to your house once, I can't remember why, and you gave me a tour and it was love at first sight. You are so talented. I know your daughter, Ella, from friends in Santa Barbara and from all Saints Church. I used to live on eucalyptus Lane by Sea Meadow and my daughter and I would ride our bikes through the neighborhood and wish we lived there! You did an amazing job. My store was called Circa on Coast Village Road. So glad you like the blog, I will check yours out as well. Thank you for writing. Thank you for sharing your talent as well. XOXO tell Ella I said hello.

    1. What a fun estate sale. I am living in Paris now. My daughter is in college here at the American University of Paris. My husband is from Paris and his whole family is here so we thought it would be best to live here in Paris. So far, so good. I do however miss a little garden so I am looking for a house on the lake in Annecy. You are officially invited for a visit! XOXO

  12. Hi Ellie,
My name is Cheryl and I'm a friend of Elizabeth's. She turned me onto your blog shortly before she met you and I am enjoying it very much . Truly a breath of fresh air as they say.

Have you ever heard of Jason Becker of Richmond , CA ? He has lived with ALS for many years now. First struck while on the brink of becoming a famous rock star . (True story .) Some young Englishman even made a movie about him a few years ago . He and his family are remarkable . Give them a google .

    Sincerely, Cheryl

  15. What a wonderful blog, I especially enjoyed having a peak inside Coco's apartment! Your daughter is lovely, I have two teenage boys and even though they're not always interested in talking to me, they are everything! One of my son's is gay, so I get more info out of him - unfortunately he is off to college next fall. Sigh. Luckily my husband still talks to me. And btw, you are lovely too! Take care of yourself and the leopard hat is magnifique!

  17. Actually many people solve als and heal. In fact some friends of mine are even making a film about it. Their home page, which includes a trailer for the film, is here. http://healingals.com/

Also I have been blogging about people solving als here. http://healingchronicles.com/

You too can heal yourself, I am sure.

    All the best.

  18. I love your tree, I say this with all honesty. If I was to pick one out, and saw yours first, it would be the one I would buy. Lots of places to hang vintage ornaments, without touching all kinds of goofy limbs in the way. And maybe a few pieces of tinsel since I do have the old lead kind that I found a few years ago on e-Bay.
This is my very first time to your blog, and I am so happy to have found you. It is people like yourself, that bring the "Gimme More" sometimes never satisfied people ,(like myself) down to earth. Altho, I am in the twilight of my life at 75, sometimes I have to tell myself, to grow up, like today, after reading your blog. Your are an inspiration with your humor, and living with ALS. I look forward to reading your blog each time you should post, and I will be reading some of the older ones too, to catch up... Wishing you a very Merry Christmas, and days ahead of feeling comfort and less stress...Bonnie, in snowy white, cold Wisconsin

  19. Hi - I just found this blog and think you're awesome. I only read about the tinsel and then I read about you. You're great. My mom had ALS, and something kind of funny - she LOVED tinsel and put it on strand by strand. And her first Christmas with my dad - he got a tree on Christmas Eve - they did that back in 1960 - and she sent him back out to get another one because the tree was pathetic. ALS kind of sucks, but I'll pray for you and your family, and I will say that we worried about my mom suffering so much but it wasn't so bad in the end.

  25. Just found you..you are an all-around inspiration...you sure you're not from Texas...cause you have the spirit in you so common amongst great Texas women. My Gan-Mommy sounds much like your grand-mother...I feel our generation is lacks the style compared to their well-dressed/coiffed before-the-day-started style.
I look forward to your future entries!

First time was from 2007-2009, then we were back in SB for 5 years, and now we're here again, "semi-permanently" this time. I'm sure we have many mutual friends from All Saints, etc. Email me if you have time and we can get a coffee or something! tonimcclintock@gmail.com. Best!

She is so excited you are moving to her neck of the woods - friends are so important, and having them nearby is icing on the cake! Good luck with your move. I wish some day to meet both of you - I am inspired! I will be subscribing to your blog just as soon as I finish this comment!

  33. Hi Ellie, your blog is the best! I'm from SB too (hi Toni!) and was friends with Heather and Colby. I now live in NC and love your stories, especially the references you insert (all saints, Yolanda, CVR, Circa, etc) as it makes it all seem like yesterday. I loved your store and style! Thank you for your brutal honesty and your biting wit as you navigate life with ALS. You are amazing. You inspire me to travel more ... and to inspire my kids to travel as well. Happy 2016!

I found your blog through Yolanda's instagram account. First of all let me tell you that you are hysterical and so entertaining. You definitely have a way with words. Also, you are very inspirational and so is your husband. In the midst of this struggle you are very blessed to have a wonderful support system surrounding you. I wish you the best of luck!

  39. Rest in Peace, Ellie and Matt. My sister Helen told me about this blog, right after Ellie passed. I did know Ellie, Matt, and especially Heather, in Missouri, many years earlier before they moved to Cali. So very sad- but so nice to see how beautiful they were and happy at times, and that they had beautiful children too. I hope Heather, Anne, & Dan are healing and living well and enjoying the grandkids. Namaste ~Rebecca
