Bonjour from Paris...

Just wanted to give you a quick update because I don’t want any of you to worry about me. I am still at the palliative care center in Paris. ALS is giving me a good fight right now. Unfortunately, I cannot hold my neck up very well, I cannot swallow food, and my voice is very weak so I cannot do the blog (Gracie is typing this for me) … Oh, and I shit my pants every day this week. So, my world is a little rocked right now.

I hate 90% of the staff here because they are stupid and if you don’t believe me, I invite you to spend a week here. Let’s see, where should I start… Nurse Francoise told me to stop talking to her but I explained to her that I was talking to my computer, so she decided to close my feeding tube with the back of her clenched fist. That is how the week started and ended with two psychiatrists trying to medicate me against my wishes. #BitchesWithAnOunceOfAuthority

There are some nice nurses like Nurse Sophie, who kisses me every time she leaves my room. Then there is the big nurse named Yolande… who we will obviously love just because of her name. There is a 26-year-old nurse who is in charge of 13 terminally ill patients at night and the funny thing is she has more competence and better bedside manner than all of the old hag nurses put together. I also like the chief of nurses, Nurse Bernadette.

BUT THAT’S IT. The rest are bitches. I will be leaving the center this week to move into an apartment to see if I can gain my strength back. All of my caregivers are back, because it turns out they just hated Provence. My sister, Heather, and my mother will be here within a few hours. I’m not promising anything but I will try for the next month to live the best life that I can. Hopefully it will be filled with flowers, gardens, churches, chocolates, and perfume because after all, it is springtime in Paris.

I will not be able to write the blog very much, if at all. However, follow me on Instagram for daily updates because I will eek out enough strength for that.

Follow me on Instagram HERE

The good news is that because my mother is here to help me, the shop is still open. Not sure if I will be able to do the shop in the future so shop til you drop.

Gracie is helping me finish the book and I promise it will be finished by the end of April.

Thank you all for your well wishes, prayers, and love. I can feel all of your warmth.

  9. Hey sunshine, get out of there ASAP - those old hags will kill a bitch if you let 'em.
Enjoy being back in Paris with your family and enjoy every beautiful thing life has on offer. I hope your two besties get over there and fill that feeding tube with vodka - thats actually what the palliative care team should be doing, that and good drugs. Oh and try not to shit yourself, but lets face it - it happens to the best of us.
Thinking of you from far away in sunny Australia. Love to you and your family. (I think you decided to call me Edith or Elsie) so signing out E xxx

  40. Ellie, This was sent to me by a friend today. There is a video also on the link. www.krem.comSPOKANE, Wash. – Researchers at Washington State University's College of Pharmacy Lab in Spokane have been experimenting with ways to battle ALS – a terminal degenerative disease for which there is currently no cure – and have come up with a unique discovery.

Dr. Travis Denton of WSU Spokane said it is amazing to think of what they are attempting to accomplish here in Spokane.

“We could potentially be making the drug to give to people with ALS to stop their complications altogether,” he said.

The discovery by Denton's team could help with other diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and more.

“How excited should we be? Over the moon ecstatic,” Dr. Denton said.

“I can’t wait to go to work because I know I get to come in here and we’re potentially going to make a drug that can save so many people’s lives.”

The National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke sees something promising here, too. They have awarded Denton a $446,000 grant to boost his research.

The money is being used to make serious headway against these terrible diseases.

“It’s kind of like a flower or a fork in a road where Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s and ALS... they’re completely different diseases, but as it turns out they really do intersect at a pathway,” Dr. Denton said, “and we found that intersection, is what we hope.”

The diseases have something in common called “autophagic dysfunction.”

Dr. Denton said if you don’t have autophagy, it's like the housekeeper in your brain just stopped reporting to work.

With no housekeeper, the brain cells get “dirty." If they don’t get the care they need the whole system degenerates.

“So if we can turn that autophagy back on or hire more housekeepers to go in and clean up, not only will be clean again, it can actually be better,” he said.

Dr. Kenneth Hensley at the University of Toledo is collaborating with Dr. Denton and said he identified something capable of hiring those housekeepers.

Dr. Hensley found a molecule that works as a ‘wonder drug’ he said. They have given that molecule to a mouse with ALS and watched it reverse the disease.

“It is absolutely amazing,” Dr. Denton said.

Here is the hurdle – they do not yet know how to get that drug where it needs to go in humans, the brain.

The body protects the brain above all else, so it is hard to get a drug into the brain that the body will not attack like an invader.

So they have to mask it somehow, kind of like a Trojan Horse disguised to get past the brain’s gate.

“So it’s inside now we use some of the brain’s own enzymes to unmask it, so we open up the door to the horse and let the soldiers out and it attacks,” Dr. Denton said. "It works well.”

It is encouraging news in a string of diseases that have delivered so much darkness.

“I’m very, very confident in the science and I know that we will have a drug one day that will help people with ALS,” he said.

“I’m extremely confident in that fact.”

May the beauty of a Paris spring bring you peace and comfort! Your remarkable spirit, indomitable charm, smarts and wit have shared so much with so many. HSD is chock full of an abundant archive of posts that are due multiple readings. So while we will miss you on the blog - we will mine those riches, check Instagram, and eagerly await your upcoming book. I have throughly enjoyed both your Thanksgiving and Christmas books.

By opening up your life so bravely - you have created deep connections around the world. You hold out your hand and heart and bring us along - peaking into dark corners - shining your light on both beauty and ugliness. You have reminded us that there can be wonder and magnificence - in the midst of darkness, injustice and humbling hardships - beauty, meaning and love can still be found. Your depth of character and unflinching honesty are rare treasures.

I always learn so much from your wise, gritty observations on living a life filled with style and decorum. Sending love and prayers! Dorothy in Washington DC

I have felt your pain and have often asked why such pain exists, but also know God has permitted it. It maybe for us to realize we aren't in control and have to learn to rely entirely on Him for everything. Thank you for being so vulnerable and sharing your life with us. You have been an inspiration for showing how to find beauty in the darkest of days. You have given meaning to friendship as you have shared your friends with us. You have encouraged us with what love means as your husband has served you. You have been so real on the bond of mother and daughter. I will continue to pray that God will fold his loving arms around you so you will experience the ultimate love of a Father for His suffering child. I pray He will bring you healing and joy once more as you go through this time of recovery. Thank you again for what you have given us.

  94. Ellie, Ellie ... you have given me a few of my favorite things ... my chunky French cutting board, my elegant horn on a stand ... my Muscs Kublai Kahn (an expensive leap of faith because I totally trust your taste ... adore it!) ... But those are just The Things. I'm so grateful to have found you, Ellie. You have heard it all before, I know, but you truly are the essence of inspiration to every one of us who travel by your side and admire you and enjoy you and just love you to pieces! So happy that your mother and sister are with you, along with ALL of your caregivers (wonderful news!) and of course your Gracie and your David ... and a positive change of venue for sure. Rest, gather strength, and carry on ... we are all with you, every single day! Huge hugs all around ...

You will amaze us all, as always! Sending you lots of love and energy - I'm twirling for you a bit later than sunrise, having discovered that twirling first thing after jumping out of bed is maybe not such a good idea... Many thanks to Gracie for keeping us updated. : )

  121. Ellie, every time I go to write to you, I think to myself that it has all been said and so beautifully by all your fans (those who feel so connected to you). Off course, that is your greatness, the ability to share a world with wit and intelligence, sans pity. The ability to draw one in and make them care as if they were taking every step along the way with you. I have great confidence in your amazing grit and spirit and send my heartfelt love across the miles.

Having been a caregiver of my dear sweet mama who suffered from ALS, I can't imagine being surrounded by these people. What you need to do, is continue to push on, gain your strength, eat LOTS of calories, and feed your soul. You are a fighter and God willing, you will get better. I am praying for you!!!!

    2. Ellie Love ~ I would have a mishap in my lingerie if I had to endure nurses
of that ilk...Thankfully, there are a few "Angels" there among them to ease the incarceration. Soon you will be ensconced in your own abode with those you love and trust....then you will see the progress you will make. Come Resurrection Sunday, you will be filled with hope and strength, if our prayers
are answered and Springtime in Paris will break through the windows and refresh
you with greater joy than you can imagine. I'm not being Pollyanna, just believing that you are such a proud child, is very own and you have served Him and us so well with your spunk and example, that He cannot refuse to fill you with His particular peace and healing. Thank you and bless you Ellie, dear, for sharing your courage and "give em hell" attitude, as well as your grace and great sense of style and decorum with us. We love you and hold you up in prayer.

See? your fans feel like part of your clan? Easter week-- you will be in my prayers continually. When you see the blossoms on the trees outside your window, just thnk that there are more people out here who love you than there are blossoms on that tree. You inspire us all.
