Our Last Tango in Paris

Well, my friends, as you know I am leaving Paris. I am leaving happily but I will never forget everything that I have seen, learned, explored and experienced… and I will bring all of this back with me and it will remain with me throughout my life. Grace has one more year left at college in Paris… don’t worry, the little brat/angel will be fine without me until she graduates in May.
Over the next few weeks we will discuss more about why I want to go home…no big deal but I think it will be interesting to share with you as I am sure a lot of you have the same sentiments. However, today I am still in Paris and we have some very exciting news to discuss!
This will be my last Have Some Decorum Home Shop sale from Paris and boy, is it going to be exciting. It all involves a charming back story…
Let me start by saying that not everything can be an antique, ya know! The French know this best… It is all about an eclectic sensibility… combining the “vrai with the faux.” That is to say, true design is incorporating the real with the reproduction and there is no shame in that! A whole house of antiques is called a museum…not a home.
In Paris, there is a shop dedicated to this design philosophy. The clever owner is dedicated beyond belief to the craft of offering true French designs based on originals. Scouring the country of France, the owner purchases all of the originals and takes them back to his atelier, works with his craftsmen to replicate down to the exact detail a new life for the pieces…and offers them to you.
The success of my shop, Circa, in Santa Barbara was based on the same philosophy…to combine the old with the new. And today, by the grace of God, I have been selected/vetted to offer the line to you. Trust me, this was no easy feat and I have been working on it for almost a year. None of these pieces that will be sold on the Have Some Decorum Home Shop, Friday July 8, are available in the US. This is purely “a French thing.”
All of the designs are based on originals…at a fraction of the price…but have the same joie de vivre of the French style.
I have selected 8 styles to start with and we will grow from there…let’s take a look…
There is nothing more French than a French barometer! Every detail is perfect down to the patina to the French script. Purely decorative, this barometer would be perfect in any room of your house.

You know how I love my French herbiers and these do not disappoint! Sold as a set of 4, they are to die for.

My heart always lies with chinoiserie but it is getting harder and harder to find the originals these days so we are fortunate that I will have 2 different styles that will always be available. A set of huge tea boxes that are so perfectly French chinoiserie, you will never know that these are reproductions and who cares if they are…they are fabulous. Secondly, we can never have enough chinoiserie boxes and now we will never run out!

A set of brass snails! My favorites! A perfect charming French decorative item that brings a sense of French whimsy to any décor… In a bookshelf, on a coffee table, on a stack of books, on the dining room table setting…anywhere!

You know all of those beautiful blue and white chinoiserie vases? Well, now we have a place to put them…on these perfection of perfection French gilt wall brackets! I have 2 sizes available.

Now, nothing says “French” like lighting. The French have perfected the art of lighting. The first day that this shipment of lamps arrived to our shop from France to Santa Barbara we sold out of them in 15 minutes. You just can’t get this kind of French classicism in regular ole America. I will have 2 styles available on the shop Friday. The first is a charming electrified lantern that would be perfect on your desk, your bedside table, even outdoors! The second style is the lamp that everyone wants when they come to my apartment. A brass and glass lamp with an oval gold shade. It is marvelous!

This is a very exciting sale and everything will be shipped to you before I leave for America. After this sale, our beloved little Gracie will take over the handling of these “French Style Reproduction.” I will select the merchandise and Gracie will make sure it gets to you within a weeks’ time. This month we have 8 styles but there will be so many more added in the future…candelabras, mirrors, lamps and more decorative items… We will never go without!
The sale starts Friday July 8, 2016 at exactly 10am Pacific Standard Time. I have just started with limited quantities but if something is sold out that you had your heart set on, just email me and I will order more for you.
This is super exciting because all of the pieces are only available in France and on the Have Some Decorum Home Shop!
Happy shopping!

Welcome Back the Have Some Decorum Home Shop

Good morning from beautiful Paris.

Now that I have gotten that last blog off of my chest, let’s move forward, shall we?

No better way to start the week than with a Have Some Decorum Home Sale!

This sale is all about black lacquered chinoiserie, gold gilt mirrors and blue and white porcelain chinoiserie because… Why not! I will not rest until each and every one of you has at least one piece. 😀

I thought I would give you a little sneak peek to whet your whistle. I will also be giving more sneak peeks everyday on Instagram HERE until the sale starts which is…

Wednesday, May 18 at exactly 10am Pacific Standard Time!

Let’s start with the black lacquered chinoiserie. Do you know why I love these pieces so much? Lots of reasons… I love their elegance… The black lacquer, because they are Napoleon III, the charming scenes that include cherry blossoms, birds, weeping willows, and the imperial look of the Chinamen, women, and children… And the colors! Black, gold, persimmon, ivory, and the occasional pink, turquoise, or sage green. I mean, what's not to love. Some of the pieces for Wednesday’s sale include jewelry boxes, flower vases, match boxes, trays, and trinket boxes. Let's take a look…

Next up, my beloved gold gilt mirrors. This sale has two of my favorites… The sunburst mirrors. There are two available and if you get to the sale fast enough you can purchase two so you will have a pair… Which is golden. A pair! Do you remember the blog I did about the Victoria Press auction? If not, check it out HERE. One of my favorite rooms was the room that she had with the gigantic sunburst on the ceiling. Look look look…

This is what you could do with the sunburst mirrors that will be available on the shop Wednesday if you don't want to use them in the traditional sense, don't you think! Fabulous! I would even drop a chandelier out of it like my friend Nancy did. But they would still look great as mirrors too!

I also have a very special gilt OWL mirror that is so charming I could die… Take a look!

As always, I have a drop dead gorgeous collection of blue and white Chinese porcelain! Some of your favorites are back in stock as well as some new pieces… Vases, jars, lamps, orchid pots, and more. Take a look…

The other categories will be open on the shop as well… Baskets, lamps, porcelain flowers, accessories, books, etc!

The shop opens back up Wednesday, May 18 at exactly 10am Pacific Standard Time!

Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram HERE for more sneak peeks!

Love to all of you!

Psst!

I know I am supposed to be working on my book and not blogging but this is just a quick little posting about the shop!

In 2008, when I first started collecting pieces for my antique shop in Santa Barbara named Circa, the second stop after Paris on our buying trip was the South of France. There is a little town in the middle of Provence that is known for its antiques. Luckily, it’s only 30 minutes from my house! The antique dealers always have charming pieces without the overinflated Parisian price tags.

Over the Christmas holidays, on a quiet Sunday, I had time to peruse each shop without the frenzy of the summer tourists. Truly, there were some remarkable pieces… Statues, chandeliers, mirrors, daybeds, and my favorite… Accessories.

I had my eye on and took home two pieces for the shop that I think you will love as much as I do! In my humble/not so humble opinion, I don’t think any home should be without a gilt mirror and a little chinoiserie no matter the style of the house. These pieces always work. So here we go…

The first piece is a Louis XVI style giltwood mirror. Circa 1890. I love everything about this mirror. It’s a perfect size, not too big, not too small. Would work over a chest of drawers, over a bar table, in the bathroom, over a dressing table, even in an entry hall. The musical cartouche gives it that little something special adding to its charm. Octagonal shaped with the perfect gilt. It is in mint condition for its 19th century age. Measures 33" tall and 19.5" wide. The interior mirror measures 16" tall and 14" wide. The price is $1200 which includes packaging, shipping, insurance and tracking number. Let’s take a  look…

The second piece that I have for you this week is a dropdead gorgeous gigantic antique chinoiserie tray. Napoleon III. Circa 1870. Papier-mâché. Gold trimmed. Mint condition. Beautiful scene of China men and women wearing traditional dress, enjoying themselves in the garden. The colors and details are what make this tray extraordinary. Birds, chrysanthemums, tea service, fans, pomegranates, Chinese lanterns, junk boat, beautiful dresses… Colors of black, gold, persimmon, ivory, reds and blues. This would be a great cocktail tray, appetizer tray and beautiful to display. Measures 22" tall and 28" wide. Because of its large size I assume that it was used as a tabletop as well. The price is $990 which includes packaging, shipping, insurance and tracking number. Let’s take a look…

Okay, let’s talk about price. The price of these pieces is indicative of its value. These are forever pieces and hopefully pieces to pass down. French antiques are not cheap… Never have been, never will be. However, the price for these pieces is considerably less than what you would typically find at antique stores or online. I have been selling antiques for half my life and I know a good piece for a good price when I see it. I have built good reputations with the vendors and I have learned to negotiate from the best. The prices include shipping so you don’t have to worry about anything… I will take care of the details.

Voilà! The shop is open. Click HERE to shop. These pieces are under the antiques category. Email me if you have any questions.

*I have been a busy bee working on my book. I hope to have it finished at the end of February but I will be back to blogging regularly mid-February.

Not that you asked but since we are friends I’m going to tell you…

I finished all seven seasons of The Good Wife.

I just started season one of Downton Abbey.

I’m going to a dog show on Saturday hopefully to find a little a little puppy because Teddy and I need something to cuddle.

I actually got a stomachache watching Sarah Palin endorse Donald Trump but laughed out loud at one of the newspaper headlines that had a picture of Donald Trump and Sarah Palin that said, “I’m With Stupid.”

Because I am a lover of all things Real Housewives… I watched Real Housewives of Potomac and cringed because it was the worst reality television I’ve ever seen in my life short of 16 and Pregnant and Honey Boo-Boo.

My husband is going to make me the Barefoot Contessa’s beef bourguignon this weekend. Do you know it calls for an entire bottle of wine?

I am looking into a supercool new app called Share The Meal, that, through the World Food Program, supplies vouchers for food for pregnant and nursing mothers of Syria. Go HERE!

And that’s it! What have you guys been up to?

Well Hello 2016!

That was a fun year! I always consider it a good year if I don’t die. Mission accomplished. I don’t really have to make New Year’s resolutions anymore on the grounds of I don’t give a f*ck but I do think it’s important to make New Year’s goals. Goals are good. I also think it’s important to set your goals high. Why not? No one gets anywhere with mediocrity. For 2016, I have given myself 3 goals. Wanna know what they are? Here goes…

#1-Cure myself of ALS. I’m totally bored with it. It has been six long years and I have quite frankly had enough. It is time for me to get up and walk again. This is the year I try to figure it out. That is about as possible as me becoming an astronaut but I’m going to give it a shot. I will drink more green juices, take more medication, research more, explore more and basically just will it out of me. Stay tuned for that.

#2-Finish my book. This has proven difficult for me so far because I don’t know what to add, what to keep out, what you would like to know, what you don’t want to know, what lessons can I share etc. Let me know your thoughts on this. Whenever I start to work on the book, I proofread the chapter about how I had to tell Grace that her gorgeous mother has ALS, and I cry so hard I can barely breathe so I stop working on the book and go eat about 500 cookies. Emotional eating at its best. But I promise, this is the year that I finish!

#3-Expand my little shop. This will be a fun goal and I have already been working on it for the past few months! Knowing that not everything can be antique, I decided to add products to the shop that are not antiques but have all of the charm of an antique. This brings me to the topic of today’s blog!

With great enthusiasm, I am going to open the shop on Thursday with all of the new products! More than 100 pieces will be available!

When my mother and opened our antique shop in Santa Barbara, California our motto was, “Only sell what we love.” And we did just that. Everything that was in the store was something that we would want in our homes. That means we were incredibly discerning and only the best made the cut. And this is how I decided to expand my online shop. I want to offer everything that I love to all of you. Lamps, pillows, blue and white chinoiserie, accessories and of course, antiques. And in the near future I will begin to offer furniture! My ultimate goal is to re-create our shop, Circa, online. I have even brought on an employee named My Mother. I won’t pay her, will make her work overtime, no lunch breaks and she will probably sue me for workplace verbal harassment. Just kidding! I will only verbally harass her a smidge! :-)

So, shall we take a look? The shop is now organized into categories: Antiques, Lamps, Pillows, Accessories, Blue and White Chinoiserie and Porcelain Flowers. (Furniture will come next month.)

Let’s start with the lamps. My mother and I are obsessed with lamps. Decorating is like baking a cake. You start with the batter mixing in all the good ingredients, baking the cake, adding the layers of icing and finishing it off with a cherry on top. In decorating, you start with finding quality base pieces (sofa, chairs, tables), arranging them just right and then start adding the layers (rugs, curtains, lamps) and then add your cherries on top (pillows, decorative accessories). Lamps are in the layering so therefore they are crucial! A lamp can make or break a room. That’s why it’s important to choose wisely. We have lots of lamps for you to choose from, all sizes, all shapes and all dropdead gorgeous! Let’s take a look…

 Mr. Wynn Lamp

Porter Lamp

White Alabaster Lamp

Horn Lamp

Art Deco Sunburst Lamp

 Griffin Lamp

Next up we have pillows. The pillows on the shop are fun pillows. These are not pillows for your living room! We will have those later next month. The pillows on the shop are perfect for less formal rooms. Let’s take a look…

Natural History Cricket Pillow

 Miro Chicken Pillow

 London Map Pillow

 Simply Paris Pillow

Mediterranean Sea Pillow

The next category on the shop is simply stunning. Porcelain flowers! I have discovered a woman who was inspired by the 18th century tradition of porcelain flowers and has created hand-made, one-of-a-kind floral bouquets. Porcelain flowers, tole leaves, terra-cotta pots! Nothing could be more exquisite. Take a look…

 Porcelain Lily of the Valley

Porcelain Cyclamen

Porcelain English Rose

And knowing that no house could be complete without blue and white chinoiserie, I have added loads of blue and white to the shop! Lamps, vases, jars, orchid pots… All sizes and shapes! Remember, one piece of blue and white is never enough. Take a look…

 Foo Dog Lamp

 Ming Lamp

 Peacock Jar

Chinamen Jar

Now, don’t worry, I would never leave you without antiques! This month on the shop I have some very special items. Take a look…

 French Riviera Yellowware Platter

 circa 1870 French Champagne Coupes

Geisha Ware Tea Set

Chinoiserie Box

Voilà! The new and improved shop opens Thursday, January 7, at exactly 10 AM Pacific Standard Time. Everything except the antiques will ship from the US and the shipping is included in the price. January is always the best time to start decorating for the New Year so start your creative engines!

As always, I will be showing sneak peeks of the shop on Instagram every day. Follow me HERE!
What are your New Year's goals?
