Remember when I told you I had a big secret that I didn’t
want to jinx before it was finalized. Well, today it was finalized. Are you
ready?
We Are Moving
To Provence!!!
Can you even believe it? I have been working on this for
over a year. My love of Provence is well documented in previous blogs. Click HERE to read. I have been looking, researching and wishing. I have probably looked at 4
billion houses but none of them worked out until…
Until my friend Heather from Lost in Arles blog sent me a
listing of a house smack dab in the middle of Provence. It was perfect, reminded
me of Santa Barbara, a great price with a pool. We made an offer immediately
but unfortunately a local family also wanted the house, so they won. I was
devastated and was ready to pitch the biggest crybaby fit, but for some reason
I stayed calm. The real estate agency informed us that there was another house
that was going to be available. She sent us the photos and by picture number 2,
we were all in. This house was even better. Luckily, the owners accepted our
offer and we signed the lease this morning.
We move on Sunday. Au revoir, Paris. Provence, here I come.
Now because if you read my blog you know I like to talk
houses and I assume you do as well. This house is called a mas, a farmhouse. It
is all stone with big French blue shutters. There is a big terrace, a pool and
views of the Alpilles Mountains (whatever those are). Just what this sick girl
needs. Remember, Vincent van Gogh went to Provence to “recover” so I will be in
good company. Paris is lovely but I need to be in nature. I need to see trees,
hear birds, feel the sunshine and smell the lavender… And adopt a big fat dog.
I need to connect to the earth. That and a few green juices should keep me
alive.
Chez Decret
I also thought it would be fun if we (my blog readers and I)
all had a new adventure, new surroundings.
I am looking forward to discovering every inch of Provence from the
restaurants, the farmers markets, the flea markets, the churches, the
countryside and the people. Speaking of people, I am interviewing for my new
Provence friends. You can pick up an application at any café. Qualifications
must include a sense of humor and three references. That’s it. However, if you
are a super crabby old school Provençal farmer with an olive grove and chickens,
please apply because I like you already. Seriously though, email me if you want
a new friend. I am really friendly, my husband is not and neither is my
daughter but that’s okay because I have enough personality for both of them. I
will invite you to barbecues, movie nights and pool parties.
How did I do all of this? How did I manage to get myself to
Provence? I’ll tell you the truth… My sweet friend Ally Hilfiger told me that I
should make a mood board and that I should manifest my destiny. I did just
that. I cut out and glued pictures of Provence directly across from my bed so
that I could see it every day. Provence was never out of my sight. Guess what?
It worked. I never gave up hope. It wasn’t easy to convince my husband. He
works in Paris, we have a beautiful apartment and Provence was for vacation,
not real life. Finally, bit by bit, he started to see the light. He knew it was
best for me. Paris is no place for a sick girl. He knew that I needed to get
back to the sunshine.
So here we are, our apartment is all packed, my caregivers
are ready for the move, Gracie will stay in Paris to finish school and we leave
on Sunday. Relax, Grace will be fine. I have hovered enough. Time to slow down
and enjoy life. Sorry Paris, no hard feelings.
Are you guys ready for our new adventure!!!
WoW!! Soooo happy for you!!
ReplyDeleteI love the Provence, we went there for a month every year in my childhood, looooong time ago 😉
I,m sure you will be very happy there..
Such a surprise and such an adventure. And things are happening so quickly! Your happiness about your new suroundings is in every line of your blogpost, just wonderful to read. Wishing you a good move and so, so much happiness in the Provence. Look forward to reading about all your discoveries.
ReplyDeleteAAAAAH! I'm soooo excited for you!!! But you have to get two dogs! Maybe three. Congratulations and maybe I'll move and be your Provence friend. I love lavender and excel in cooking with it. And ommmmmg it just hit me that you'll be there for Thanksgiving. I'm going to loosen my corset and faint into a chaise. I read all the signs' forecasts at my (I'm stretching it here but good enough-we bonded over a discussion/debate over fictional characters' signs when she wrote an article about all the Mad Men characters' charts. I also convinced her that Scarlett O'Hara was obviously a Taurus.) friend Susan Miller's website astrologyzone.com and October was to be a big month of positive change for Aries, with an asterisk for those born within a few days of the 25th of March. So there's that bode (vote?) of confidence for you.
ReplyDeleteEllie,
ReplyDeleteAll the best for your move and new life in Provence! It sounds fantastic. Wish I lived nearby and that I could apply to be your friend. I am much more social than my husband, so love getting together with some of my close girlfriends. Last night I was just at a friend's - she wanted to show me how to bake a beer bread and we also perused the latest J. Crew catalog. Much more fun to do with a friend!
Super-ready! I'm so excited for you Ellie. This is going to be so good! I hope the move goes really well and let us know when you're settled in XOX
ReplyDeleteHooray for you! I love Provence and I await the tales of your adventures, advice, etc. It is a beautiful place to be and the fresh air will, indeed, be better for your health than that of Paris.
ReplyDeleteSo happy your dreams came true! Just don't cut your ear off. Looking forward to your new adventures in the sun! I can smell the lavender here in Los Angeles!
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful news -- a new adventure -- I can't wait to see Provence through your eyes and your words!
ReplyDeleteBest of luck in your new adventure. Here's hoping nature, sun, lavender and big fat dog bring you happiness and healing.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! So happy for you! What a wonderful new adventure.
ReplyDeleteDear Ellie, Well, now there's no chance of running into you in Le Palais Royal one day as hoped! BUT, I AM SO VERY HAPPY FOR YOU! Wishing you all the best adventures ahead. Susan, NYC
ReplyDeleteCONGRATULATIONS!! Can't wait to ride along vicariously on this new adventure! Cheryl
ReplyDeleteI am so happy for you! The excitement in your voice comes through loud and clear. I'm anxiously awaiting pics and commentay when you are settled.

ReplyDeletePure magic. You are my dream best friend.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful news for you! Although I am little sad and agree with Susan from NYC. I'll be arriving in Paris on Sunday and was crossing my fingers that I might run into you. You will definitely need a dog or two and a couple of cats.
ReplyDeleteBEST NEWS EVER! I would love to be your new BFF, but I am only there for one month in the summer. WAAAaaaaa. Can't wait to see all the photos, as you put your stylish stamp on every inch!
ReplyDeleteI am so excited for you! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteYeehi!!!
ReplyDeleteThrilling news, so looking forward to your Provence posts!
ReplyDeleteEllie - This is just fabulous news! I think I deduced your "secret" a couple of months ago, as you've been dropping some subtle, and not so subtle, hints all year. I'm most excited about your new dog. I've always thought that you needed a furry companion, but I understood why you didn't with your upstairs apartment.in Paris. Dogs are so loving, loyal, but most of all therapeutic.I hope you find the perfect fur baby who will love you unconditionally and always be by your side.
ReplyDeleteYour new home and gardens look so lovely and I look forward to seeing you work your magic on the interiors.
Congratulations and Viva Provence!
xoxo
Joanne
I love it! I love how you made it happen. I love the pictures of the house. I love the descriptions of the mountains I have never heard of the grumpy olive farmers I have never met. I wish for you happiness, health and a seriously attractive next door neighbor that sunbathes regularly and pops over for martinis.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! I have been in love with Provence since reading a Peter Mayle book years ago. It is my dream to one day live in Provence. So happy for you and little bit jealous!

ReplyDeleteNature, its energy soothes and heals all manner of ills. Ok this next part will seem really kooky but I know it to be true....imagine in your minds eye the nourishment that you will receive by the sun, the trees the air. ReplyDeleteWoohoo, Ellie! That is fantastic news, I'm so happy for you! Looking forward to hearing about your new adventures. No doubt you are going to be overwhelmed with Provence friend applications - I'm ready to submit mine, but have to figure out how to get over there first. :-)

ReplyDeleteYes fight hard for your dreams. XOXO
DeleteWonderful news. Provence a place on my bucket list and now will see it through your eyes. Great news and so very happy for you!
ReplyDeleteAnd discover it you will! I have a quotation for you from a little book called "Songs of the Earth".
ReplyDelete"I go to Nature
to be soothed
and healed,
and to have
my senses put
in order once more." --John Burroughs, 1837--1921 American naturalist
Penny
I love this poem. Thank you!
DeleteI just realized the word "order" should read "tune"--either way, I agree with the author! Thanks!
DeletePenny
Bravo! I'm with you all the way!
ReplyDeleteEllie, this is great news. I guessed what it was some time back, but didn't comment because, like you, I didn't want to jinx it. I too am moving to Provence, in November. Currently I live in the Languedoc, but a friend and I have bought a big property near Carpentras and have rented a house nearby so that we an be close during renovations. Its probably about 1/2 hour from where you will be -- I think you will be near St. Remy, as you have a view of the Alpilles. Which by the way is my favorite part of Provence, but we were not able to find something there big enough and arranged the way we need it for a price we could afford. Its okay, we love the Carpentras property, and we will have a view of the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux. So I would like to apply!
ReplyDeletebonnie
So excited for your new adventure as well. Send me your email address so I can invite you to my cocktail party. XOXO Ellie
DeleteLOOK AT THIS..........SO MANY NEW BUDDIES SO CLOSE!
DeleteHi Ellie, bonnie here -- I am chateau.bon@icloud.com or chezbon@yahoo.com. I will be "more or less" in Provence by Nov. 13, in our temporary house while we wait for and work on the new property. I thought (for reasons unknown) that my email address would show up on my posts......
DeleteEllie, Sunday will be here before you know it. I am back at our Mas and can't wait to see you once you settle in. Do I have to wait for you to settle in?
ReplyDeleteJudy
I hope I can meet Julie too.
No you do not have to wait till I get settled in, just come over! When I figure out my address, I'll give it to you. XOXO
DeleteI'm so happy for you! Your joy brought a smile to my face. Enjoy your new adventure!
ReplyDeleteHow exciting - a new chapter in your life!! So happy for you. All the best to someone who deserves it. xo
ReplyDeleteWell Ellie....... you honestly blow me away! Just as you did when I first stumbled upon your blog via Ladolfina! I have gained so much by sharing your stunning self through your blog and NOW your fans/cyber friends will get to share your "awesomeness" in Provence. Expecting high adventure and know you will continue to make us smile, make us laugh, make us cry, make us know things we didn't even know we didn't know. Like .... how good it is for us to say "fuck"! A lot!!! Love you Ellie. Namaste, Redema
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing adventure...lavender, olive groves, orchards, village life, the long views....and Paris will always be there for visits. Good job.
ReplyDeleteGreat decision!! We moved to Provence from London five years ago, and have never regretted it. We had a lovely apartment in London, overlooking the Thames, but in the winter you couldn't tell where the river stopped and the sky began - both were grey/beige. Here in the Luberon, even if it rains in the morning, by 2.30pm that wonderful Provence blue is breaking through the clouds. Last Friday, we had lunch in the village, after the weekly market, and the sun was hot enough for me to ask for a parasol (I have Scottish skin, which is basically blue - I have to turn white before I start to tan). Provence is a place where you can earth yourself, which pares down your life to the essentials - heat, wild flowers, beautiful stone, and beauty everywhere you look. Nature in all her glory is all around.
ReplyDeleteCONGRATULATIONS! Excellent decision. We moved from London to Provence five years ago and have never regretted it. We live in the Luberon, on a hillside above our local village, and are surrounded by beauty and nature in all her glory. If you have a view of Les Alpilles, it will be your good fortune to have the same. Nothing grounds you like Provence - the heat, the history, the personality of the Provenceaux people - all things to be admired. If you need a friend, tell me where to find an application!!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about having a holiday cocktail party so send me your email address so I can send you an invitation! Looking forward to meeting you. XOXO ellie
DeleteOH HEATHER you better take PHOTOS of this cocktail party for me!!!!!!
DeleteYou know that I will!
DeleteAre you kidding!?!! That's fantastic!!! I am so happy for you! ... I was thinking that maybe the secret was your book was finished. I can't wait for that, but I think this is better news. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing! This is going to be fun for us also! You must have way less junk than I have if you can move that quickly. And amazing that your caregivers are able to pick up and move also. Sounds like it was definitely meant to be.
ReplyDeleteCan your husband do his work online?
Sheila
Again I cried at one of your posts. This time tears of JOY for this great move. I'm think I need to do a mood board for my secret dreams. So looking forward to you sharing this new adventure with all of us. May God bless you new home and all the lucky new friends that you will collect along the way.
ReplyDeleteHoly Mas! You did it! A few posts back you were having problems with a difficult realtor, but I guess, in staying true to your nature...and the ancient wisdom of the I Ching (Perseverance Furthers)...you made it happen. SOOO happy for you and US. Now we get to see Provence up close and personal. The stone house and pool look pretty perfect. I LOVE birds, so my wish for you is that you'll find lots of comfort and joy from all they have to offer.
ReplyDelete*Something you don’t know about me? Every morning, rain, snow or sleet, I feed the birds in my backyard, a protected wetland. Wintertime’s especially fun because the cardinals play this game of “toss the peanut” with me. They (20 or more) rush to one tree, wait for me to toss, then try to be the first to catch the peanut – Some in mid-air! Birds can be pets too ;)
I’ll leave you with this quote from the I Ching (Book of Changes), “He whose truth is accessible, yet dignified, has good fortune”. I see lots of good fortune in your future Ellie xox
OHHHHHHH!!!! I thought you had a dog!!!!! You HAVE to have at least one dog......La Contessa is right.....more than one is better! But; I swear to God...I would die without a dog!!!! Please make sure there is at least one dog!
DeleteAnd it can be next to you a lot!!! Total healing!!!
XXOOXX!!!! Coming to visit!!!!!
How absolutely wonderful...well done, Ellie!! May your life in Provence be even better than you hope!
ReplyDeleteSo happy for you, Leslie
BRAVO!!! GLORIOUS!!!!
ReplyDeleteBig dreams equal big results! What a wonderful new beginning. I think that this place has been waiting for you. (Starting a mood board now...) I will drink a green juice in celebration of your move!!
ReplyDeleteI am so excited for you! I can hardly wait for you to post about your new life in Provence!
ReplyDeleteProvence sounds idyllic and the fact that you will be nesting there....it must be perfect.
ReplyDeleteA golden retriever, lavender, a new home and your friend Heather! Sounds like BLISS.
Hope your move goes without a hiccup and that you settle in soon.
The hidden power of moodboards? Cool!
ReplyDeleteEllie, I can't keep reading your blog and never comment, I choose it to do it today when yet again you've inspired me to go out and dive into life. Seeing and experiencing the world through your eyes and words is so captivating.
I fell in love with Saint-Rémy last summer, and to think I had never been when I live just a few hours away.
You're such a go-getter and I admire you immensely.
Ellie for President!
Take care, Milena
Very, very happy for you !!! Unfortunately I do not live in Provence (Italy), otherwise I would come and see you. I am sure you'll find a lot of new friends: you are a special person.
ReplyDeleteEllie, you little magician, you! I'm SO HAPPY for you! Your new home is absolutely charming, and I'm hoping you will share some more photos with us. It will be such fun to decorate your new nest for the holidays! XOXO / Nancy
ReplyDeleteI SHED TEARS OVER BON COURAGE AND NOW TEARS OF JOV OVER PROVENCE. MY HUSBAND CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW I COULD BECOME SO EMOTIONALLY INVOLVED WITH SOMEONE I'VE NEVER MET. MEN !!!! SO HAPPY FOR YOU AND FOR ME BEING ABLE TO SHARE THIS NEW ADVENTURE. XXX ROSEMAY
ReplyDeleteI KNEW you were moving. I needed this post. I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I like to talk houses!
So happy for you Ellie! Looking forward to exploring the countryside through your eyes.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your move! It's very exciting! We made the move from Paris to the countryside last year and it was the best thing we could have done. Country living is so wonderful and we don't regret it a second! I'm sure all the sun in lovely Provence will be a real boost! I am jealous!
ReplyDelete
