Bonjour
from Paris. Just a quick note to let all of you know that I am still alive but
I am very very sick. I have a respiratory illness that for regular people would
be a slight nuisance but for me it’s a near-death experience every five
seconds. It’s difficult to breathe, I cannot cough, blah blah blah. The doctors
have been to the apartment every day monitoring everything… My heart, my oxygen
level, my lungs etc. My friend Debbie has flown in from St. Louis to sit in bed
with me all day. David is here and so are the caregivers. So, I am trying to
get better but it is taking a little bit of time. My panic attacks are at a
whole new level of crazy. I’m going to take a little break from the blog until
I get better. In the meantime, don’t cheat on me and read any other blogs
because I will be very very jealous and I really can’t take that kind of stress
right now. No guilt trip. :-)
Rest, take a break. I wish you restful days. I imagine those dear to you are taking very good care of you, and you of them ;) ! "Gute Besserung" as they say here in D-land.
ReplyDeleteOh Dear. Stay strong!
ReplyDeleteHugs from Luxembourg.
I will miss the blog.... Sending good thoughts your way.
ReplyDeleteEllie - much love and light to you! Many prayers for your recovery. I promise, I will only read "Habitually Chic" until you are back. Barbara

Wishing you well, Ellie! I am following your journey and check in every morning to hear your stories about life, decorating and dealing with ALS. Stay strong!
ReplyDeleteHi Ellie,
ReplyDeleteI think of you every day (here in a sweet valley near the Pennsylvania Appalachians). I cared for my brilliant husband (just so similar to you) while he could not move a muscle, eat, see, etc. with progressive supra-nuclear palsy (crazy name as he had no 'palsy').He loved all kinds of music that I played for him every day, and I read to him also.
He would be happy to know that you are able to eat wonderful food as he could not. When we long ago traveled to Paris, he spent hours finding just the most unpretentious, wonderful places to eat. Just love your writing, fondly, Suzanne
Oh no... Please please rest and recuperate, I need you!!!
ReplyDeleteBoth my husband and I pray for you every day!!!
God bless you brave girl.
All our love,
Chris and Terri
Sending you many get well wishes, Ellie. xxoo Lilah.
ReplyDeleteSending you love from London (not so far away). Get well soon Ellie xxx
ReplyDeleteThere's nobody else that compares to you, of course we'll all stay faithful!
ReplyDeleteJust fight this bastard chest infection and come back soon, you'll be missed, much love to you.
Hugs, love, prayers and get well wishes as you rest and recuperate. You are adored. xo
ReplyDeleteSending good thoughts for a speedy recovery!
ReplyDeleteMy sweet Ellie... you are in my prayers and I lit a candle for you in church yesterday. I also ordered both your books so I can have my Ellie fix while you are recuperating. Stay strong, bff.
ReplyDeleteEllie, we all love, and thank goodness for Heather telling us about you. Love her too. Send someone down to rue de Bac to get you a Miraculous Medal at St. Catherine Laboure's church and her story of Mary appearing to her. Also pictures of beautiful mosaics there. I am a convert, but love learning the rosary, and say my Hail Mary's every time I can't sleep or depressed since my husband died. It helps me. Will light a candle for you also. May your guardian angle watch over you and your family. Love you as we all do!! Get well. Looking forward to reading your Christmas book.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear this, thinking of you and hoping you are better soon.
ReplyDeleteDear Ellie, I just found your blog late yesterday afternoon and read your entire blog last night. I dreamt about you and love you! I'm linking to you today so I know there are lots of extra prayers coming your way. You are so beautiful! xo janet

ReplyDeleteSending you love and hope from the far west coast of Canada! You are a light in our lives - a speedy recovery to you my dear.
ReplyDeleteDear Ellie,
ReplyDeleteRemember the virtual little red book "I Love You Because..."? Well, today's "I love you because" is, "I love you because even when you're sick as the proverbial dog and gasping for every breath, you thought of all of us who were worried about you and checking 10 times a day to see if you posted anything".
I'm heading to Good Shepherd again today - there will be a candle there for you along with my prayer for your recovery, and of course, for the miracle.
xo/Nancy

ReplyDeleteHi Ellie,
ReplyDeleteI have been remiss in responding to your blog posts due to some pressing family issues but have read each and every one of them as well as purchasing both of your books, which I LOVE!! I think of you everyday and it always puts a smile on my face! I also always send my love and positive thoughts your way for wellness.
In this time of illness you must focus your energy on healing (I know, pain in the butt, right?). Don't worry about us - we'll all be here when you return. Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right? Something tells me it's just another bump in the road (of the many) and you'll be back with your humor and keen wit intact ready to entertain us once again in the new year.
Just imagine the applause when you appear on that stage ready to go again!
Much love and hugs from Portland, Oregon (I'm actually a fifth generation Californian)
xoxox Janice
P.S. I'm not buying that crap about not being brave, girl! You are brave every day that you wake up and choose to live! Every time you choose to compose a blog post, every time you worry about your daughter, every time you leave your house! You are certainly brave in my description of the word "brave". And, you truly inspire me to be brave everyday when I face a difficult situation. Thinking about you and your journey inspires me to keep going on the treadmill of life!
Love and light are on it's way to Paris. Take care XO

ReplyDeleteWhatever. Blah blah blah. You'll be back in a jiff.
ReplyDeleteWe will wait for you and no is is going to cheat because NO one is as funny as you!
ReplyDeleteSo you must get better- for the mental health of us all. Any chance meditation would help to keep panic attacks at bay? Probably not until the infection is clear.
Blessings from MN, not quite Paris! Tamrah
Ellie, the strength of a woman is not measured by the size of her arm muscles or leg muscles. It is measured by the size of her heart. Her strength is also not measured by how many pounds she can pick up, but instead is measured by how many other people she can lift up through her words and her actions. You are one...strong...woman. So many of us are thinking of you, praying for you and will be waiting for the next blog when you are ready. Rest, renew - we'll be hear waiting for you.

Ellie, While shopping this week, the lady in line with me said she witnessed the most beautiful gesture that I wanted to share with you since it's YOU who usually inspires US:
ReplyDeleteShe was in a Music store yesterday, and a man came in and inquired about a violin for his child. The owner told him it was $385. The man put his head down, sadly, and walked out.
Another gentleman was in the store, observed this, and went running out of the store after him. He asked the disappointed man if he might split the cost - would that make it possible for the man to buy it? The man said "yes", then returned to the store and purchased the Violin with this kind man's help.
Perhaps that $193 donation will enable the child to obtain a college music scholarship. Regardless, it allowed us all to witness the gift of hope derived from one mans' unselfishness. This Christmas, lets' all see if we can find someone like this who needs a little help or support. Let's each create our own Violin Story, and share them with each other.
Truly a gorgeous story..........

ReplyDeleteI've been chatting with the universe for you, arranging for a return to better health. LOOK LOOK LOOK at all the people who are missing the Ellie way of living! We want you back to "normal" so we can enjoy you, even just a little longer. Best wishes, much love, hugs from afar, from a big fan and the zillion billion others, too.

ReplyDeleteEllie, Thank you for introducing me to beautiful things that I might not have ever seen had it not been for you and your blog. I do not come from a family of "means" and have never been exposed to such sophisticated beauty in real life like you have. You have lead such an interesting life filled with amazing, intellectual and creative people such as yourself. A gift. I thank you for sharing with me. Sending much love and aloha from Kauai.

Dear Ellie--
ReplyDeleteI have been cheating on graduate school with your blog. Yeah, you've long since knocked the other blogs off for my first pick of cheating. Sometimes I return again and again to your posts to drink up chocolate chaud, the Louvre or Monet's dishes, but mostly for your brilliant snark as you face the challenges of living in beauty every day.
Growing up on different sides of L.A., we may never have been friends had you not started this blog. I'm sending you love as the super-storm hits up here in Northern California. The weather is dangerous, but beautiful. I'm thinking of you and your family. Stay strong, stay strong through this storm. You will always find what is beautiful. Thank you for working so hard to share what you have found. Get better soon, Sweetheart--it will be a while before I get to Paris and I'm waiting to hear more. Much love--Susan
I've just recently found your blog and your IG and I love them both. I adore your style and your frank communication and your work ethic. I love that you are writing books at this time in your life. And I have to say, I love your tinsel tree. I am praying that you feel well really soon and this respiratory illness clears up quickly so you can enjoy Christmas! Best,
ReplyDeleteKim

Prayers and much love to you Ellie. Think only good thoughts-it is a joyous time of the year, and I hope you are getting the best of care.
ReplyDeleteEllie,
ReplyDeleteI love you so much that this morning while working on my tree at home (sent you a photo of my salon tree), I decided I must open some prosecco (I'm too cheap for real champagne and too bourgeois for California imitation) and I air-toasted to you. You've inspired me so very much. I can be the ultimate self-pitying asshole. You get through to me in a way only the Greats ever have.
Merry Christmas.
Stephen
Dear Ellie,
ReplyDeleteI opened my mail this morning hoping to see a post from you...which would mean you are feeling better.
You are in my thoughts and I'm happy that having your friend beside you and your husband and daughter and caregivers loving and tending to you will help you get well fast.
With love and prayers and one swift kick in the ass to ALS.
I believe you are stronger than the monster this round.
